“Our Purpose is to Conducting Research for the Future and
Happiness of Mankind“
Addressing the Many Challenges Facing the Global Society
Humanity is currently facing many challenges posed by a range of factors that threaten our continued existence. It is not clear whether we or future generations can go on living on this planet in the same way and with the same values that we have held up to now.
Following its fundamental philosophy of “conducting research for the future and happiness of mankind,” IIAS undertakes fundamental research into various problems such as how to address the issues facing the global society and what role and function should culture, science and technology have in the 21st century.
Ability to Pose Questions to the Society
Presenting our “findings” to the World. From Japan, from IIAS.
Our society has reached a turning point where we veer off the path of “single-minded pursuit for development and efficiency” and follow the one of “peaceful and sustainable coexistence of all mankind.”
Along this new road lie fundamental questions that need to be answered in order to secure the future and well-being of mankind. IIAS takes it on as its mission to explore those questions, uncover new problems and present our “findings” to the world. We are committed to leading in-depth discussions and shedding light on the discovered paths towards solution.
Collaborating Across National, Organizational and Sectoral Boundaries
Since its founding, IIAS has been actively engaged in various research projects aimed at creating a sustainable society. For each project, researchers from different countries, institutions and disciplines come together to hold deep discussions in a voluntary manner and in a free and open atmosphere. This is where ideas resonate with one another, leading to the discovery of new directions for culture, society and economy in the coming years.
04Network and Interchange
Gather, Connect and Expand the Leading-edge Wisdom
IIAS offers a range of interchange programs that bring together leading-edge wisdom from around the world, facilitate in-depth discussions and share the fruit of these work and other intellectual resources with the society at large.
We focus on projects whose results can be shared and utilized in society through the industry-government-academia network, as well as those that can serve the social needs and requirements.
“A Basilica of Wisdom” that Produces Inspiration, Comfort, Contemplation and Interchange
Surrounded by four ancient imperial capitals of Asuka, Naniwa, Nara and Kyoto, the hilly region of Keihanna has always been the center of Japanese culture. The area is today home to Keihanna Science City, where IIAS is located. Our campus, with its serene buildings blending into the rich natural surroundings, was designed to reflect the unique Japanese climate, culture and delicate sensitivity. It offers a tranquil environment that stimulates the emergence of researchers’ insight and inspiration—an ideal venue for advance studies.
